They're not helpful, though, and only serve to make the world more confusing and scarier. We're not going to have that here. Replies 2 Views How do you transform your imaginary being from a bunch of numbers recorded on a sheet of paper to a vibrant being with personality and depth? If you start with a solid understanding of who your character is, what they want, what makes them tick, etc. This means coming up with a backstory. The story can be happy, tragic, strange, funny—whatever you like. But there are a few elements you should include to set yourself up for better roleplaying:.

What places, people, and events shaped your character to be who they are now? And what do they want most? Actually, it might be better to leave some elements undefined so you can adjust as you play.

Every great character has weaknesses. Real people with real problems make mistakes. If you want to be a better roleplayer and want your character to come alive, they should make mistakes, too. Using the examples above, Clair the druid could have trouble trusting others and damage a relationship with a helpful NPC as a result.

Theo the bard might be tempted to squander his treasure on a shaky bet. Pebble the monk may be overly confident and quick to start a fight. And for many players, that thought is intimidating beyond belief. What do they do as a result? Or even something insignificant. This is the first time I'm going to play a spell caster, Cleric specifically, and some of the spells and cantrips have 'V' for 'Verbal'. I'm a Life Domain Cleric devoted to Pelor, the god of sun and healing. So rather than just saying 'I touch the Rogue and cast Spare the dying', what are canon phrases or chants I can use to be more in depth with my character?

There are no canonical answer to your question in the 5e range of products. There may be something to be found in the Gord the Rogue series by Gary Gygax as Pelor is a Greyhawk deity but that is a lot of research that involve books that are mostly out of print.

The spells start on Page To keep it manageable I would develop a phrase for each of the school of magic with a spot where you fill in the spell name. Then develop variations over time. For example Cure Wounds is a evocation spell so you say for all evocation spells "I call upon the Light to spell name ". I call upon the Light to Cure Wounds. Because of this, the phrase mechanic has had a lot of playtesting behind it. Yeah, it's a fair question but the answer is, and is likely to remain, there aren't any canon spellcasting chants or anything remotely resembling such, for historical reasons.

Basically, people thought that DND involved learning how to actually cast spells, which was not helped by the fact that the early writers did do some anthropological research on various magical traditions, including contemporary ones, for their worldbuilding.

There was a massive moral panic, and DND became strongly associated in the popular consciousness with Satanism, suicide, and various forms of blasphemy. So in later editions, they removed many explicit references to the supernatural, including even getting rid of demons for a while, to appease people's fears.

This is why we can't have nice things.

RS Conley has a good answer using English words; if you want to sound a bit more mystical, I'm a fan of nonsense words or syllables such as those found in the PC game Nox ; and of course there's always faux Latin like in Harry Potter or any of a number of other fictional works.

Think about the character's traits, both physical and mental, and how those traits would play out in their life.

Once the character is set up and the game has begun, it's time to dive into that character's shoes. Starting out slow is fine for beginners; just remember that interaction is key. Describe the character's movements, actions, body language, and make sure they're engaging with the rest of the party and with whatever issue is at hand.

Also—and this is something first-time or nervous players should keep in mind—don't be afraid of talking. Let the interactions happen because the game will absolutely keep moving after them too. This one is going to sound difficult and probably a little ridiculous to anybody who isn't a trained actor or improviser, but it applies to all. One of the easiest ways to get into the mindset of the character for a session and distinguish player from character, which is important is to find a specific voice for the character that isn't the player's "regular" voice.

It doesn't even need to be a different accent, just a way of speaking that makes other players think of the character, and not the person playing them. Just spend a little time before the game finding it, and the rest will come naturally through gameplay.

As mentioned previously, a good role-player will figure out how to separate themselves from their character. Otherwise, it's not role-playing at all, and getting into the game becomes significantly harder. Playing a party of murder-hobos and terrorizing NPCs is one thing, but harming other players within the party is completely another.

Everyone is there to have fun, which is difficult if one PC starts attacking another. Some Dungeon Masters choose to play a "GM PC", but this tends to cause a lot of problems at the table, and is strongly discouraged.

It often requires comprehensive knowledge of the rules, and requires a great deal of trust from your players that you are not cheating or bending the rules against the players. The Dungeon Master often needs to have time to dedicate to the game outside of game sessions, and needs to be trusted by the players. If you have an experienced player in the group, they are often a good choice, but many players myself includes are the Dungeon Master in their first roleplaying experience and are immensely successful.

The Dungeon Master is much like an elected official: their authority comes from the consent of the players. If the players are unhappy with the Dungeon Master, or if the Dungeon Master is unable to fill their role adequately, it falls on the players to assist the current Dungeon Master or find a replacement.

Be respectful of the Dungeon Master, because they often put more effort into the game than anyone else, but don't bow to every whim of the Dungeon Master if they are being abusive or unreasonable. Again: This is a heavily trust-based relationship.

Because being the Dungeon Master can be strenuous, consider changing Dungeon Masters occasionally. This prevents Dungeon Masters from becoming "burnt out" and losing interest in the game, and it gives other eager players the chance to be the Dungeon Master.

If you are not the Dungeon Master, you are a player. Players control only their own character, and interact with the story, materials, and personalities portrayed by the Dungeon Master. Because players only have control of their own character, their control over their own character "Player Agency" should only be violated in extreme circumstances, such as when the character is under the effect of a spell.

There is no "wrong" way to roleplay, and there is no "best" way to roleplay. Roleplaying is a very personal activity similar to acting or writing. Find a style which works for you, and consider experimenting from time to time to see if your tastes have changed as you've gotten to know the game better.

Other players may have different styles, but don't let that influence you. Do whatever is fun and comfortable for you.

However, because it can be difficult to pretend to be a completely different person, many new players find this style uncomfortable. Roleplaying your character in different ways matters a LOT. When I say a lot, I mean a lot. Your roleplay style effects all three parts of a good adventure: socialization, exploration, and combat.

For example, a character who is shy may have a hard time socializing and therefore miss out on some opportunities. That isn't necessarily bad if one of their character's traits states that they are shy you're not exactly going to them kick down the tavern door and demand a drink, are you?
